Counts are the Census Bureau’s published, privacy-protected frequencies. Rank is the original dataset rank, including ties; it is not the position within this search.

How to read these results

The published count is a privacy-protected frequency of a name in the 2020 Census. A smaller rank means a higher frequency; tied counts can share a rank. These are historical national figures, not current population estimates or state, city, or global totals.

Coverage and limitations

  • Eligibility requires a name in the 2010 Census Names Table with at least 100 occurrences in both years before disclosure avoidance. Some published 2020 counts fall below 100 after noise is applied.
  • Census editing removes punctuation, spaces, and numbers and makes other corrections. The published table uses the 26 English letters. Recorded spellings may therefore differ from your own.
  • The table does not include every surname or every person. Its unranked “ALL OTHER NAMES” aggregate is excluded from individual surname searches.
  • Frequency does not establish a surname’s linguistic origin, an individual’s ancestry, or a relationship between families. No individual census records are shown.
